PLAN for FEB 27 (and Look-Ahead)

Boy, I sure missed chorus last week!  I was really looking forward to hearing you reproduce that wonderful, blended sound that you sang with the fabulous tools from Sandy Marron!  Have you been successful in making time each day to reinforce those skills?  Thanks to your section leaders and the "video notes" from Cat West, you have lots of reminders available so you can continue to strengthen and get used to the new and improved you!  And, of course, you should be rehearsing the choreography in front of a mirror so your body establishes the muscle memory and you'll be able to focus more on the vocals.  I've asked the Choreography Team to meet and make some final decisions on a couple of places in the uptune, and we'll definitely be finalizing it at Advance, but rehearse what you know at this time.  And ALWAYS have your FACE and EYES fully engaged.

We had some things we were going to get done last week that had to be postponed, so this Tuesday (Feb 27) will be a busy and fast-paced one.  The two main things are:
  • EVALUATIONS - Row-by-row as described in an earlier post.  We've gotta get it done this week or we won't be able to get it done until after our Advance  since Ryan is coming next Tuesday (Mar 6).   Everyone bring your own sheet music for the reviewers to mark up.  We need to be sure everyone is 100% on all the notes & words.  This should be an easy process because I'm sure you caught all the errors during your self-evaluations!
  • CHORUS CHAT - Please be sure to review the videos that I posted on Kathy's Korner describing each of the issues before Tuesday so I don't need to take that time at rehearsal.  If you have questions/comments before then, put them in the comments with that article so everyone can see them.
Here's the schedule for Tuesday, Feb 27:
  • 5:30 - Music Team Meeting, Elks Taco Tuesday, agenda sent via email
  • 7:00 - Warmups (rhythmic and vocal) - Marron-ated vocals (bring your water and straws)
    • Hear a few Valegrams stories
    • Present Love Bear
  • 7:30 - Rehearse - alternating choreography & sound
    • Who's Sorry Now
    • All the Things You Are
  • 8:15 - Evaluations
  • 8:45 - Chorus Chat
    • Youth harmony workshop
    • Chorus show
    • Summer schedule
    • Chorus tour
    • Beach trip
  • 9:30 - Afterglow

MARRON-ating our sound

  • Alignment – earholes over shoulders, head/chin parallel to floor, unlocked knees
  • Speech-like mouth posture and word delivery
  • Relaxed, low breath with no tension anywhere to allow low larynx (makes more room for resonance)
  • Straw between molars – avoid jaw tension and over-extension, natural jaw hinge, and helps stay in tune!
  • Blowing straws into water – singing into the water
  • Maintain EE vocal tunnel on AH vowel
  • Use Barbershop ears - think ahead, be a smart singer
  • And so much more!  Watch the videos as soon as they are available!

  • Feb 26 - PVIs at Denise Taylor's (Silverton)
  • Mar 5 - PVIs at Diane Watson's (Keizer)
  • Mar 6 - Ryan Heller, 6:30-9:30
  • Mar 10-11 - Advance Weekend with Lea Beverley
  • Mar 12 - PVIs at Diane Watson's (Keizer)

  • April 10 - Early choreography, 6:30
  • April 17 - Early choreography, 6:30
  • April 24 - Send-Off Show, we arrive at 6:00; show starts at 7:30
  • May 1 - Final rehearsal
  • May 8 - Dark (no rehearsal)
  • May 15 - Annual Installation & Awards Banquet

  • Check your email frequently and respond to chorus-related emails in a timely manner.
  • Let Lynne Rice know about your plans for Advance. If you don't pick a roommate, she will assign one for ya.
  • Let Kathy Scheel know when you want your Personal Vocal Instruction (PVI) session - 4 dates offered - everyone gets one.
  • Let Janet Owen know your travel plans for Reno.
  • Let Marian Martin know about your lodging/roommate plans for Reno.
  • Let Norine Ask know of your interest in volunteering to be on the Chorus Management Team.
  • Let Diane Watson know if you can perform on July 7th.
  • Rehearse all the repertoire songs on your own so you can apply the new vocal/performing skills to all of them.
  • Do something to build your stamina every day - physically and vocally.

Do you realize that we are just 10 weeks from Regional Competition?!

Your personal work ethic is what will help bring the entire chorus to a stronger and more authentic  performance and earn us a higher score.  As a goal-oriented person, I'd sure love to have them call out Oregon Spirit Chorus as Region 12's Most Improved Chorus because I believe in you!
