Notes of Harmony July 2014

What can improve your health and make you happier at the same time? Stay tuned……….

We've had such a flurry of activity since Kathy's singing lessons and our guest night. The new rehearsal hall seems to be working well--little glitches have been worked out and the sound is great at Micah! Lots of visitors are checking us out--and several auditions are coming up!

People are checking us out. Every few days, I get an inquiry from the OSC website or MeetUp.  If you don't know about MeetUp, it works a little like Facebook. It's a network of local groups made up of people with common interests. Meetup makes it easy to organize a local group or find one already meeting up face-to-face. Thousands of groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities.

Meetup's mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference. Add your name to the list of people who are going to OSC, make a profile, reminders (notifications) and RSVP when you get a reminder email about our rehearsal. You can add a comment about why you like OSC. Right now it looks like we have only 13 members! And only 2 of those are going to rehearsal (I don't think so….) Have you "liked" OSC on Facebook?

Mary Hadley and Brigid Zani passed their auditions --congratulate them when you see them next!  And be sure to introduce yourself to Sue DeBit, our newest member, who drives all the way from Newport. That's dedication! Way to go, ladies!!!

If you're thinking about AIM in September, let me encourage you to go. I went with Kathy & Margie to the last one, and it was top-notch musical education. I enjoyed meeting some of the Region 12 gals. It is so different when we are the new ones going into a crowd; I look forward to having familiar faces to watch for, like we did in our old region. We need to get to know these ladies!

Are you cleaning closets and scouring the garage for stuff to sell on August 9? Me, too!

Suzanne Riles broke her wrist--gardening. (You always knew it was dangerous, didn't you?!) I'll bet she would love to hear from you.

Remember we will be recording "Take a Chance on Me" soon. If you aren't one who performed this before, you might enjoy watching the YouTube video of OSC from Spring  2013. Choose Act 2--it has Let Yourself Go, So It Goes, Take a Chance, From a Distance, and Parting Glass. Also found there is Act 1, which has Girls Wanna Have Fun, How Deep is the Ocean, This Joint is Jumpin, Long Ago, and I Will Survive.

To improve your health, try singing on a regular basis. Use your diaphragm - the large muscle that separates your chest and abdominal cavities - to push air through your vocal cords, making beautiful sound. Using your diaphragm to sing is a good way to promote a healthy lymphatic system, which in turn promotes a healthy immune system.

If you want to start singing for health and have some fun with it, I highly recommend that you learn how to sing in harmony with another person or group of people. Your immune system will thank you for it.

Singing improves breathing, develops core muscles, exercises the brain (memory, concentration, linking left and right brain function), engages the emotions and encourages a feeling of belonging.  Singers report benefits in all these areas, but even more they report a huge improvement in their overall mood.
